Stories from Beirut
September 9, 2020
On August 4, 2020, a blast rocked the Lebanese port city of Beirut. An explosion detonated in a port warehouse holding fireworks, kerosene, and ammonium nitrate, volatile cargo from a ship once bound for Mozambique that had been in Beirut since 2013. The blast not only destroyed the grain silos and surrounding structures in the port, it sent a shockwave that destroyed buildings for several miles. More than 190 people were killed, over 6,000 injured, and hundreds of thousands were left homeless.
Gather Reporter Sara Hammoud, an alumnus of INJAZ Lebanon, lives in Beirut and wanted to take action for the Lebanese people and her city. She took over the JA Worldwide Instagram stories from September 1–5 to share actions taken by the people of Lebanon, particularly the youth.
